The manufacturer of outboard and inboard engines developed an improved transmission featuring greatly reduced shift force requirements. The unique design required a robust, high-efficient push-pull cable.
The corrosive nature of the marine environment is harsh on push-pull cables. Equipment and materials have to withstand extreme marine conditions from zero degree Fahrenheit to continual immersion in salt water, all while maintaining optimal performance. The cable often makes sharp bends as it travels from the control head to the gunwale and back to the engine. When the cable makes these bends over extraordinary lengths (up to 70 feet), bind and drag on the cable strain the transmission’s shift mechanism.
CMA’s customer sought an improved transmission design for enhanced marine propulsion. The engine manufacturer spent significant development resources to reduce the transmission’s shift load and wanted to compliment their design with one of CMA’s high efficient throttle and shift cables. Our engineers worked closely with the client to thoroughly understand their requirements and custom-designed a product for their needs.
In order to improve marine operator experience and shift sequence, CMA developed a high efficient push-pull cable with a unique, patented center core. The specially designed core has minimal contact with the inner lining of the cable and uses slip-enhancing plastics and lifetime lubrication to enhance shift performance.
With our patented cable core, CMA provided the engine manufacturer one of the most efficient cable products in the entire marine industry. Our custom product design and development ensured the customer had the exact specifications needed for their cable assembly.
